CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Hans Christian Andersen
CANON: Fate/Grand Order
HISTORY: Here!
STRENGTHS:
🟊 ( LOYALTY )
Regardless of the situation, Andersen remains true to his ideals. He always speaks his mind, is unafraid of standing up to Servants who can, without a doubt, kill him by simply twitching their finger, and has declared before he'd follow his Master through hell. He's devoted to his own personal moral code and to those who's earned his respect.
🟊 ( EMPATHY )
As a writer, he feels his stories are for the outcast of society. He's capable of understanding the perspective of "monsters" and the struggles of others. Even if he may scold someone's poor life choices, he's capable of sympathizing with almost anyone.
🟊 ( WITTINESS )
Andersen's known for his sharp tongue and quick thinking. He likes to engage in deconstruction, fires off-the-cuff responses at his fellow Servants, and is incredibly book-smart. In the London singularity, he also demonstrates some decent analytical skills.
FLAWS:
🟊 ( CYNICISM )
Andersen is a misanthrope and believes the worst in humanity. His attitude sometimes leads to a "why even bother?" mindset and he often writes his own usefulness off. This has resulted in him being a rather passive character, who'd rather sit on the sidelines than believe in his capacity to enact change.
🟊 ( CAUSTIC )
Andersen has almost no filter, regardless of who he talks to. He has a terrible habit of nitpicking at flaws he sees, be it in himself or others, and this sometimes makes him poor company. He has a tendency to be overdramatic in his rants, which cements his reputation for having a poisonous tongue.
🟊 ( AN AUTHOR'S PERSPECTIVE )
Because his very existence is rooted in his career as an author, Andersen has a tendency to view life through the lenses of a story. He sees suffering as a possible "conflict" to draw inspiration from, sees unarguably evil people as interesting characters. As such, his moral compass lands on "Lawful Neutral" - he obeys his own moral code, but he has an unfortunate track record of sympathizing with terrible people. Everyone - even monsters - are valid in his eyes.

AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: Hans Christian Andersen
AGE: 52
POSITION: Professor of Advanced Runic Inscription
AU BACKSTORY:
🟊 Born to a poor family in Denmark, was later adopted by a family of rich government workers. They recognized his talent for magic at 16 and sponsored his apprenticeship to their local Runesmith Guild.
🟊 While Andersen took his studies seriously, he was far more interested in writing stories. He spent most of his 20's trying to get published. In his late 20's, he published a set of fairy tales that heralded his fame.
🟊 During his 30's, a woman he was in love with married someone from his adoptive family. Andersen wished them well. Unfortunately, the woman was found dead not even a week later.
🟊 [CW: Suicide, cults.] This event greatly disillusioned Andersen, and he became involved with a small magus cult. All the members, save for him, committed suicide at the behest of their leader. There are still rumors that he was romantically involved with said leader and that was why he was the sole survivor. He is no longer a part of the cult. He doesn't like to talk about this period of his life.
🟊 Andersen spends the next few years out of the public eye, directing his focus towards his stories. He hears about Daybreak through the grapevine and, on a whim, decides to try and interview for a faculty position.
🟊 To his great surprise, he was hired.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION:
🟊 "Observer" → "Actor"
F/GO Andersen is more passive than his AU counterpart. He doesn't believe in his capacity to change things. AU Andersen feels similarly, but his decision to apply to Daybreak Academy stems from a desire to make amends for what he's done in the past, and his belief that there will be more skilled students to take up their teachers' mantle.
RACE: Human!
SECRET SOCIETY: Andersen is a member of the Danish branch of the Runesmith Guild.
POWERS:
🟊 ( SPECIALTY: BOUNDARY MARKING )
Some inscribers focus on items. Andersen's specialty lies in altering the properties of an area. By creating a verse of runic script, he's able to grant benefits to those within (i.e. increased vitality, increased strength, increased speed). The larger the area, the longer and more complicated the verse must be - you have to do a lot of bargaining to convince the Mist to do that much for you!
During his time in the cult, Andersen inscribed engraved runes on his own body to grant himself specific powers. He has a total of three inscriptions:
Since a young age, Andersen has been interested in feycraft. While he's unable to use the art himself, he's a dedicated scholar and is currently looking into possible ways to fuse runic inscription and feycraft together.
🟊 ( PERSONAL SKILL: OBSERVATION )
Andersen has a keen eye for people's personalities. His observational skills are so great that he considers himself "inhuman" and apart from humanity, since his instinct is to see others as characters first and humans second. This, of course, doesn't mean he's omniscient. He just has a very good grasp on people.
🟊 ( PERSONAL SKILL: THE ARTS )
Andersen was a keen student of theater and singing, although those two careers never went anywhere. He's a skilled writer, and his talent as a storyteller is masterful.

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT
1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND.
[Andersen leans back in his chair, legs crossed.]
What's there to say? The Runesmith Guild apprenticed me. I didn't graduate at the top of my class, but I was impressive enough for them not to kick me out.
2. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEACHING EXPERIENCE.
I've never taught before. [A shrug.] Most rune inscribers are muscleheads given magical armor. They love to jump right into the thick of the brawl, decking it out for the sake of money or fame. Do you think someone like me-- [here he gestures at all of himself] --could stand to mentor those overpowered gorillas? Don't make me laugh. If I tried bossing them around they'd snap me like a twig.
... huh? "Am I talking about the Rune Guard?" Of course I am! I thought I made that obvious. Vultures, the lot of them.
3. WHAT UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE ACADEMY?
I may be third-rate compared to a magus, but no one can inscribe the way I can. That, and the Runesmiths stuffed my head full of exclusive knowledge -- what I'm saying is my brain's a top-tier delicacy, and I'm inviting all of you to feast upon it.
... what's with that disgusted look?
4. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR A SCHOOL TO PROVIDE TO ITS STUDENTS?
Life experience. You're looking to throw these children into the battlefield, aren't you? They need to understand what's to come.
5. DESCRIBE YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE AND HOW YOU INTERACT WITH COWORKERS.
[Andersen barks a laugh.]
Ha! "Honest" is the mildest adjective I can think of. Yes, let's stick to that. I've a million other words I could label myself with, but I'll save it for another time.
6. HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PUSH THEMSELVES AND TAKE THEIR SCHOOLWORK SERIOUSLY?
Saving the world isn't enough for them? [The sarcastic comment slips out without thought.] If they somehow can't comprehend that what they're learning is going to be used in the real world, I suppose I'll have to drill the realization into their heads.
7. HOW DO YOU MANAGE STUDENTS WHO ARE DEFIANT OR ACTING OUT?
You shouldn't make a scene unless you're an actor in a play. I'd handle them out of sight and individually.
8. HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE AND MENTOR STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING OR DEPRESSED?
Who wouldn't be depressed with the way the world is going? [He says this seriously, without a hint of humor.] The future isn't promising. That's why this school exists. And that's why you're hiring. These children spend their precious childhood preparing for a worst-case scenario hanging over their heads like some metaphorical guillotine.
That said... humanity is characterized by its spark. Every human carries a light in them. Someone they love. Their mantra for living. It'd be a matter of learning what that spark is. With that knowledge, you can rekindle the flame.
9. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON TO TEACH EVERY STUDENT WHO WALKS THROUGH OUR DOORS?
Toil like a workhorse. Nothing comes easy to those sitting on their asses.
16. ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF ACADEMY FACULTY IS PROTECTING STUDENTS FROM THAT WHICH MIGHT DO THEM HARM. TELL US HOW EQUIPPED YOU ARE TO DO THIS.
Did you read my resume? I may not be the most impressive candidate, but I have my qualifications. Pair me up with the more talented staff, and I'll show you what I can do.

EFFECTS🟊 ( SPECIALTY: INNOCENT MONSTER )
☆ Affects all within the space matching the inscriber's criteria.
☆ Can double the strength, speed, endurance, and magical power.
☆ Can heal non-fatal wounds over time.
☆ Can cause the area and those inside to be invisible.
LIMITATIONS
☆ Effects do not carry beyond the boundary.
☆ Maximum three effects at a time per verse. Anything else is way too complicated.
☆ The ideal area is 500 square feet. Anything larger would require more preparation time and more complicated verses.
During his time in the cult, Andersen inscribed engraved runes on his own body to grant himself specific powers. He has a total of three inscriptions:
THE MATCH GIRL'S LIGHT (ᛊ ᛋ‬)🟊 ( RESEARCH: FEYCRAFT )
☆ Marked on both his palms.
☆ Allows him to shoot bolts of fire.
☆ Downside: overuse results in burns, as seen by the burnt skin on both his arms. He wears long sleeves and gloves at all times because of this.
THE MERMAID'S DANCE (ᛚ‬‬)
☆ Marked on the soles of his feet.
☆ Increases his agility and speed above that of a normal human's.
☆ Downside: overuse results in intense pain and may even cause bleeding of his feet. His legs are covered in scales as a side effect of this inscription.
THE NIGHTINGALE'S VOICE (ᛉ‬)
☆ Marked on his lower throat.
☆ Allows him to inscribe a runic inscription's effects on a target by reciting it like an incantation.
☆ Downsides: cannot cast a runic inscription beyond one verse (four lines). His throat is in constant pain as a side effect of this inscription.
Since a young age, Andersen has been interested in feycraft. While he's unable to use the art himself, he's a dedicated scholar and is currently looking into possible ways to fuse runic inscription and feycraft together.
